Privacy Policy

NasCam is built around a simple principle: your home security footage belongs to you and should never leave your control.

This Privacy Policy explains how NasCam (“the app”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use it. NasCam is an Apple TV (tvOS) and Android TV application that lets you view your own Synology Surveillance Station cameras and recordings. It is published by VTO Software.

1. Information we do not collect

We designed NasCam so that we never receive your data. Specifically, NasCam does not collect or transmit to us:

• Your video streams, snapshots, or recorded footage.
• Your Synology NAS address, DiskStation Manager (DSM) credentials, or session tokens.
• Personal information such as your name, email address, or location.
• Usage analytics, telemetry, crash reports tied to your identity, advertising identifiers, or device fingerprints.

NasCam contains no third-party advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs.

2. Information the app processes locally

To function, NasCam stores a small amount of configuration on your device only:

• Connection settings. The address of your Synology NAS and your preferences (such as camera layout). This is saved locally on your TV device.
• Credentials. The username and password (and, where applicable, session tokens or two-factor state) used to sign in to your NAS are stored securely so you don’t have to re-enter them each time. Apple TV uses the system keychain. Android TV encrypts saved secrets with a key held by Android Keystore. They are used solely to authenticate with your NAS and are never sent to us.

This information stays on your TV device. Deleting the app removes it.

3. How video and recordings are handled

Live video and recorded events are streamed directly from your Synology Surveillance Station to your TV device over your local network (or over any remote-access connection you have configured yourself, such as a VPN or Synology QuickConnect). NasCam does not route, copy, cache to any external server, or retain this footage. All recordings remain on your own NAS hardware under your control.

4. Network connections

The app communicates with the Synology NAS or Synology QuickConnect address you configure. It also contacts Apple or Google storefront services to load product details, process purchases, and verify Pro access. It does not phone home to VTO Software or to any analytics endpoint. If you enter an incorrect NAS address, the app will simply be unable to connect.

5. Children’s privacy

NasCam is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.

6. Data security

Because your camera data stays between your TV device and your NAS, security depends largely on your own network and Synology configuration. NasCam supports HTTPS and also permits plain HTTP connections for local NAS setups. A plain HTTP connection is not encrypted. We recommend HTTPS or a trusted local network, strong DSM passwords, two-factor authentication, and current DSM and Surveillance Station software. Saved credentials use the Apple keychain or Android Keystore-backed encryption.

7. Third-party services

NasCam is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Apple or Google may process information about downloads, purchases, subscriptions, devices, and store accounts under the Apple Privacy Policy or Google Privacy Policy. VTO Software receives no camera footage, NAS credentials, or app analytics from NasCam. Your interaction with Synology Surveillance Station and QuickConnect is governed by Synology’s own terms and privacy practices. We do not control the privacy practices of Apple, Google, or Synology.

8. Your rights

Because we do not hold any of your personal data, there is nothing for us to export, correct, or delete on your behalf. You remain in control of your NAS data. Use “Forget this NAS” to remove saved connection data, or delete NasCam to remove all local app data. Apple and Google provide their own controls for store and purchase records.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected on this page. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

10. This website

Sections 1 to 9 describe the app, and nothing below changes them. The app still sends no camera footage, NAS credentials, or analytics to VTO Software. Store services process purchases as described above.

This website (nascam.tv) is separate, and it does measure traffic, because we need to know whether anyone is finding it.

Visit counting

• We use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool that we host ourselves. No third-party analytics company receives your visit.
• It sets no cookies and stores no identifiers. It does not follow you across websites, and it cannot be used to identify you.
• What is recorded: the page visited, the referring site, the campaign parameters in the link you clicked, an approximate country, and the browser and device type. IP addresses are not stored.
• We also record when a visitor clicks through to the Apple App Store, as an anonymous count. Apple does not tell us who installed the app, and we do not try to find out.
• We use Google Search Console to see which search terms lead people here. It reports aggregated queries, never individual visitors.

Advertising measurement

We sometimes buy search ads. To learn whether an ad led anyone to the App Store, this site loads Google’s advertising tag.

• It runs for one purpose: to count App Store clicks that came from one of our ads.
• Outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it stores a first-party cookie and reads the click identifier Google adds to the ad link.
• Inside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it is switched off by default. It stores nothing on your device and sets no cookie. Google receives an anonymous signal it uses to estimate totals.
• We never send Google your name, your email, a purchase, a price, or anything from your Apple account. We do not have those things.
• The tag is Google’s, so Google’s own privacy policy applies to what it collects.

There is no consent banner. In the regions that require consent for this kind of measurement, the advertising tag is off unless and until that changes, so there is nothing to consent to. Elsewhere you can opt out through Google’s ad settings, your browser’s cookie settings, or any content blocker. If a blocker stops either script, every page works exactly the same.
